In 2013, British artists Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss, joined by over 500 volunteers, transformed the sands of Arromanches Beach in Normandy with 9,000 haunting human silhouettes raked into the sand — each one representing a life lost during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.
What started as a small team quickly grew as locals joined in. Using stencils and rakes, they created this massive, temporary tribute to Allied soldiers, civilians, and even fallen Germans. The powerful installation lasted only a few hours before the tide washed it all away — a moving symbol of how quickly lives and memories can be swept by time.
